I started myself in January 2010. You’ll mainly want a major diatonic 10-hole harmonica in the key of C, which is what a lot of tutorials teach by. If you’re gonna get an additional key, it would probably be the key of A.

As for brands/models, a lot of people recommend the Hohner Special 20 and the Lee Oskar, which are good for both beginners and advanced players. The Lee Oskar is better known for its durability, while the Special 20 is praised for its sound. In the U.S. these harmonicas go for about $27-32.

Those two are popular because they’re well-marketed. There are other harmonicas in the same price range that, in my opinion, play better (easier), but you won’t find them easily in local stores — you’ll have to order online.
