Posted on March 19th, 2010 26 commentsHave you ever wondered where the Harmonica came from? How does a Harmonica work and how are they constructed? What types of Harmonicas are there? What is the difference between a Violin and a Fiddle? Where did the term “Oh, Fiddlesticks!” come from? These questions are all answered in this video. As an added bonus there are some interesting photos of Harmonicas and few fiddle pix to go with yer fiddlestix. The show is set to music made by what other than Fiddle and Harmonica. Mike Stevens is the Harmonica player in the background music and he offers the MP3 for free from his website at: www.mikestevensmusic.com Mike Stevens Hailed as an innovative musician and author, this artist transcends the perceived limitations of the instrument in virtually every musical genre. His aggressive soulful approach to the harmonica takes audiences on an incredible journey. Best known for his groundbreaking work in the bluegrass field with legendary Grand Ole Opry members “Jim & Jesse” (with whom he has performed on The Grand Ole Opry over 300 times); the artist was able to create an original, much sought after and often copied, style of playing the harmonica. Mike hails from Canada, and has won the “Entertainer of the Year” at the Central Canadian bluegrass awards 5 consecutive years. After 5 years, he was retired in this category. Uttar Pradesh Folk Music on Harmonica
Posted on March 1st, 2010 1 commentThis harmonica tune is folk music and is inspired by a melody called Monsoon – Utter Pradesh Kajari from a CD Eternity – A musical Journey The melody is based on folk music a genre of Hindustani classical music, popular in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in India. The folk music of Utter Pradesh and most notably of Varanasi (Banaras) has class of its own. Keeping legends at bay, the word Kajari is possibly a derivative of Kajal that mean Kohl or Black in Hindi. Uttar Pradesh is a land that experiences sizzling hot summers and the only respite in that season are the black monsoon clouds that bring with them rain drenched with relief and great joy. Therefore typical of every season in India, monsoon too has its share of songs and dance and that is what Kajari is. The uplifting sound of Shehnai (A double reeded flute) on the original melody on the CD is designed to capture that special Varanasi magic and its strong association with this instrument. By no means can I play harmonica as it is played with classical instruments Shehnai & Flute. Just that, this is my favourite folk tune therefore I have attempted my version on harmonica.

THE MAGIC HOLE ON THE HARMONICA – Lesson# 3 – BAJAN PIEDPIPER
Posted on October 31st, 2009 1 commentOK! ~ Here’s an insiders secret for you! Hole 3 is a magic hole on your 10-hole harp! Why? 3 DRAW IS AN EASY HOLE TO BEND! Even a slight bend (a mini bend) when you’re playing produces a bluesy sound and it gives your playing a big boost! So bluesify your playing by using 3 draw judiciously! But in addition, on 3 draw, 3 bent notes are possible! Here’s how: On hole 3 inhale and (silently) make the pronunciation DA (1/2 step) DU (Full Step) and DO (Step and a half) bend. When you go to bend …
